Kitomi mentions continuing her parents’ research into string theory and alternate words during a get-together with their old high school classmates, with the suggestion that this is how the spheres of light from the otherworld with the girl and the robot are crossing from that world into this one. Despite the fact that this makes her more susceptible to her unknown sickness, they remain hopeful.
Nagisa becomes pregnant with their first child not long after. Then, in Clannad: After Story, Tomoya and Nagisa graduate from high school and marry shortly after. When Tomoya assists one of them, an orb of light from the otherworld appears, yet no one appears to be able to see it After Story
These other companions are the other girls who had story routes in the original visual novel, and the anime mixes the best aspects of their routes into Nagisa’s primary adaption. After spending time together up to this point aiding not only each other, but others in their increasing circle of friends, Tomoya Okazaki confesses his love for Nagisa at the end of the first season.
This otherworld also happens to be the source of these spheres of light, which subsequently pass through this otherworld and into Tomoya’s “actual” or “regular” world. The anime will return to this otherworld on occasion, following the girl and the robot as they try to find a way out before it ends. At the same time, there’s this bizarre otherworld, which is absolutely empty save for a tiny girl who constructs and brings to life a robot companion.
